Are you the same person you were a decade ago?
In some ways, I am – I’m the same height, have the same laugh, still hate borscht.
In others, I almost don’t recognize myself. Here are some of the things I couldn’t do, and was convinced I’d never master a decade ago:
- control my social anxiety
- be comfortable speaking in public
- develop the stick-to-itness required to write and publish a novel
- stand up for myself in salary negotiations
- say “no”
- build my own business
So when someone says that people can’t change once they hit 20 or 30 or some other number, I call BS.
You change if the circumstances and the incentives are sufficient for you to change, be it because you create the circumstances and incentives themselves, or because they are foisted upon you.
A decade ago, the thought that making a living would be dependent on networking and selling my services would have induced a panic attack of epic proportions. Now, it’s what I thrive on.
These days, I’m far less likely to think that I’m genetically incapable of certain things. And even if there is a component of immutability to those things, there are workarounds.
So I’d love to know: what are some of the things that you thought you could never do a decade ago, but are doing now?
