Let’s be honest, of course you could figure out the career thing by yourself. After all:
You’re a great lawyer. You wouldn’t be where you are today if you weren’t. You went to a good school, and got good grades. You’re a professional (or really, a Professional with a capital P). You take pride in your work product; I mean you wake up in the middle of the night because an email to opposing counsel had a typo. Also, you know the FRE by heart (quick – what’s FRE 408 about?)
You love to learn new things. You enjoy new challenges and new ideas. How do I know this? Because every new case gives you a rush. Because you thrive in an environment where new fact patterns and legal questions get thrown at you every hour of the day. Because you haven’t quit–yet– to go work on some assembly line (if you’re contemplating going to work on an assembly line because the thrill of lawyering is gone, talk to me. We’ll figure out whether this is a temporary impulse or a permanent issue. We’ll find a place where you can thrive).
You’re creative. Admit it, you perform contortionist miracles with simple English clauses on a daily basis, and you get your clients out of more jams than Smuckers® has flavors.
You’re not afraid of work. Who’s a star biller? You’re a star biller! Who can get through 1000 pages of doc review in an hour? You can get through 1000 pages of doc review in an hour! Who stays up until 3 a.m. to file a motion in California, editing until the last millisecond? You stay up… you get the drift.
But even though you know that in today’s economy, careful career planning and knowing how to hunt for business is more essential than knowing how to write a brief or take a deposition…here’s the rub:
You have no time. You have to bill. Your life is measured in .1s. You don’t even have time to call your mother (or when you do, you automatically note that the call took .4 (rounded up, of course)). Your yearly goal is 2000+ hours, and it won’t be reduced to accommodate your career-building efforts.
This is where I come in. I take the guesswork out of the process. You will be able to take action after our very first call together. And in 6 months, you’ll have a simple and implementable personal career map. Together, we’ll identify and amplify your strengths, and we’ll hone in on your ideal legal niche. And if your vision of an ideal career includes having your own clients, we will custom-build a solid business development system that will deliver results. We’ll identify your the type of client you’d like to work with, the watering holes where they congregate at dusk, and the best approaches that won’t spook them.
By the time we’re through, you’re going to love your practice. You’ll be well on your way to being recognized as an expert in your field, and your potential clients will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you’re the lawyer of their dreams.
